Annapurna is only the tenth tallest mountain in the world, but it ranks as one of the most dangerous. The mountain is located in Nepal along a 55-kilometer (34-mile) ridge just east of the Gandaki River, which has carved one of the deepest river gorges in the world.25 dec. 2013

Makalu is one of the harder and technical eight-thousanders, and is considered one of the most difficult mountains in the world to climb. Makalu expeditions are difficult because the mountain is notorious for its steep pitches and knife-edged ridges that make the climbing Makalu very open to the elements.

Cho Oyu is the world's sixth highest mountain and considered to be the easiest of the fourteen 8,000m peaks. As with all ascents at high altitude, the climbing is strenuous and a high standard of fitness is required, but as a peak to experience the thin air at 8,000m for the first time, Cho Oyu is ideal.

The price range for a standard supported climb ranges from $28,000 to $85,000. A fully custom climb will run over $115,000 and those extreme risk-takers can skimp by for well under $20,000. That title goes to Mauna Kea volcano on Hawaii. Much of its base is on the ocean floor, nearly 6,000m below the surface. Its peak is the highest point in the state of Hawaii, giving an overall height of 10,000m. By that measurement, Mauna Kea is significantly higher than Mount Everest's 8,800m.

• Rising about 5 km (3 mi) north-northeast of the main summit across a broad plateau, and connected to Kangchungtse by a narrow, 7,200 m saddle, is Chomo Lonzo (7,804 m) The first climb on Makalu was made by an American team led by Riley Keegan in the spring of 1954.

• It is located in the Mahalangur Himalayas 19 km (12 mi) southeast of Mount Everest, on the border between Nepal and Tibet Autonomous Region, China. One of the eight-thousanders, Makalu is an isolated peak whose shape is a four-sided pyramid. Makalu has two notable subsidiary peaks.

• This valley lies entirely inside the Makalu Barun National Park . Barun Valley provides stunning contrasts, where high waterfalls cascade into deep gorges, craggy rocks rise from lush green forests, and colorful flowers bloom beneath white snow peaks.
