The western side, from Luz-Saint-Sauveur, is 19.0 km (11.8 mi) long, climbing 1,404 m (4,606 ft) at an average of 7.4% with a maximum of 10.2% near the summit. Starting from Sainte-Marie-de-Campan, the eastern climb is 17.2 km (10.7 mi), gaining 1,268 m (4,160 ft), at an average of 7.4% with a maximum of 12%.

The 21.4km climb gradient peaks at 12% and Britton Tom Simpson tragically died on the climb in 1967 and is honoured with a memorial close to the summit. Chris Froome's win on the climb was one of the most memorable stages of his 2013 Tour de France triumph.

The Col du Tourmalet is one of the most famous climbs on the Tour de France. It has been included more than any other pass, starting in 1910, when the Pyrenees were introduced.

The legend of Tourmalet, however, is rooted as much in its beauty and history as in its difficulty. It perfectly characterises the rugged green landscape of the Pyrenees - often bathed in bright sunshine and with seemingly endless peaks and valleys extending into the distance in all directions.
